The Truth About DIY Skincare: Why DIY Skincare Can Do More Harm Than Good

DIY skincare has recently become a viral trend, often marketed as a “healthier” or “safer” cost -effective solution for your skin. But here’s the hard truth: just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe or effective for your skin.

As an experienced esthetician, I’ve seen firsthand that homemade skincare typically causes more irritation and doesn’t seem to show the same results that one would get from a professional skincare routine.

Before you start raiding your kitchen, you should definitely consider these potential risks.

Risk #1: Disrupting Your Skin Barrier

Our skin actually has a delicate pH balance, typically around 4.5 to 5.5, which keeps the skin barrier strong and healthy. What many don’t consider is that DIY skincare products can give you an end product that has a pH level that is too high or too low, which can easily disrupt the skin’s barrier, leaving it vulnerable to sensitivity and dehydration.

Risk #2: Lack of Results

Just because an ingredient is known to be beneficial doesn’t mean it will actually penetrate the skin and be effective. Skincare will not work without proper formulation. For example, vitamin C needs to be stabilized and at a specific pH to be effective. Simply rubbing fruits like strawberries, avocados or pineapple on your face isn’t going to give you those brightening benefits you’re looking for and will rather likely lead to irritation or even worse -burn your skin.

There is a reason professional skincare formulators spend years perfecting their product formulations. This ensures safety, efficacy, and stability—something that unfortunately, can’t be replicated with a DIY approach.

Risk #3: Potential for Reactions and Sensitivity

You may think you know your skin well, but it’s difficult to predict how it will react to raw, unrefined ingredients. For example, using raw honey or dairy on your skin can cause allergic reactions, and even soothing ingredients like oatmeal can be problematic for some people.

What You Should Do Instead

I get it, natural DIY skincare may sound fun and a more cost effective solution but what you are really risking is the health of your skin as well as limiting your results. Instead of turning to DIY remedies, invest in well-formulated products. It’s that simple.

If looking for a more cost effective solution, start with the essentials - cleanser, day and night cream. It’s better to have well-formulated essentials than a cabinet full of DIY skincare that doesn't deliver results or even worse, disrupts your skin’s balance.
